mediakesehatan.online, America - Because we live in a tropical country, sometimes at night the air temperature remains hot so we will sweat a lot and find it difficult to sleep soundly. Some people get around this by turning on the air conditioner or fan.

However, health experts say that using an air conditioner or fan, especially if the direction of the air flow is exposed directly to the body, can be harmful to health. We finally chose to open the bedroom window so that cooler air enters the room. Actually, can sleeping with the bedroom window open be harmful to health?

A study conducted in the Netherlands, to be precise by dr. Asit Mishra from Eindhoven University of Technology has proven that sleeping with the window open can actually improve sleep quality. According to this study, not only does cool air or wind enter the room, increased blood circulation will keep oxygen levels in the room good and carbon dioxide levels in it will decrease.

“Many people are not aware that a third of our lives are spent in the bedroom. In fact, we can sleep 8 hours of the 24 hours available in a day. For this reason, we must pay attention to the air quality in our bedrooms,” said dr. Mishra.

This research was conducted by involving 17 people. The participants were then divided into several groups. Some sleep with closed rooms, but some sleep with rooms left with doors and windows open. In this room, sensors are also placed that can detect oxygen or carbon dioxide levels, room temperature, humidity, noise levels, and overall air circulation. The participants were also asked to fill out a survey containing the quality of sleep they felt.

The results of this study are that sleeping in a closed room will prevent us from exposure to noise, but room temperature and body temperature tend to be higher than people who sleep with the windows open. Participants in the second group tended to have lower body temperatures. This will make the frequency of waking up in the middle of the night decrease due to lower levels of carbon dioxide in the room.

"If we can't open the window due to safety factors, it's better to open the bedroom door so that air circulation remains smooth," suggested dr. Mishra.
