We have certainly heard the notion that regularly drinking sweetened condensed milk will trigger weight gain or even obesity. Actually, is this assumption in accordance with medical facts ? 

Health expert Ir. Achmad Syafiq Msc, PhD from the Center for Nutrition and Public Health Studies, University of Indonesia, said that until now there has been no research that proves that sweetened condensed milk can cause obesity. Even though it is known as a drink with a high sugar content, as long as it is consumed according to the recommended serving per day listed on the sweetened condensed milk packaging label and adopts a healthy lifestyle, it is likely that we will not experience weight gain or even obesity.

"Until now, there is no scientific evidence that sweetened condensed milk can trigger disease. According to WHO, obesity is caused by many factors such as lazy to exercise, rarely consume fiber, and consuming too many calorie foods every day. This means that obesity is not caused by just one type of food or drink,” explained Ir. Ahmad.

Lately, there is an assumption that sweetened condensed milk is only rich in sugar. In fact, the production of sweetened condensed milk must comply with standards, which include several sources of nutrients needed by the body. For example, sweetened condensed milk also contains about 6.5 to 9.5 percent protein and 8 percent fat. This means, as long as it is consumed in the right way or portion, we can also get its health benefits.

According to the 2018 Basic Health Research Data (Riskesdas), the fact that the cause of obesity in school-age children in Indonesia is a lack of physical activity such as sports, not the habit of consuming foods rich in sugar, salt, fat, or preservatives.

Especially for the consumption of sweetened condensed milk in children, the figure is actually still very low, which is only 9.4 grams per day for children at the age of toddlers and 4.2 grams per day for children of school age. This means, this figure is still lower than the maximum daily sugar intake limit of 50 grams.

It's just that, if in addition to sweetened condensed milk we are used to eating foods rich in calories and other sugars, it could be that our daily sugar consumption exceeds this limit and we will be more prone to obesity.
